Community Justice

Community justice

Since 2006 the Wise Group has developed mentoring services for people serving short term prison sentences and on release. The mentors build trusting relationships with customers, meet them at the prison gate and support them to resolve practical issues on release. The mentors work to reintegrate people with their families and communities.

The unique aspect of this work is that we have recruited over half the mentors with lived experience of the justice system. The mentors are role models and personal advocates on behalf of their customers with support agencies such as housing, health and welfare benefits.

Among the programmes we currently deliver are:

  • New Routes works with over 1000 people a year and provides a mentoring service for people on release from prisons throughout Scotland to support them to transform their lives. New Routes is funded by the Scottish Government Reducing Reoffending Change Fund
  • A delivery partner in the Shine women’s mentoring service which supports women in the community justice system. Shine is also funded by the Scottish Government Reducing Reoffending Change Fund.
  • A through the gate mentoring programme in the Durham and Tees Valley area. The Wise Group is a member the new community interest company that won a contract in the area as part of the reform of probationary services.
