Shibu’s Volunteering Journey With Wise Steps

Shibu joined Wise Steps in August 2019 and worked with job coach Sheila Jameson to improve his CV and start the job search process. Struggling to get interviews Sheila contacted Wise Steps Employment Engagement Co-ordinator Donna Barker who was able to secure him a place with YMCA’s Walker Park Café in February. Lockdown has caused the café to close intermittently but, when open, Shibu has been back and is enjoying building his skills portfolio. Shibu said:

“Working at the Café has given me the chance to gain new skills and build my confidence. Lockdown was difficult as I was not able to work, but since I’ve been able to come to the café again, my confidence has sky-rocketed and I have enjoyed meeting my friends again.

“Being on the Wise Steps programme has given me a new outlook. I feel much better about myself and what the future holds.”

Here at the YMCA supporting people from all backgrounds whatever their needs is what we do. We believe that everyone deserves and opportunity to achieve their full potential so we create opportunities for them and provide the support they need to be successful. The Wise Group share our ethos and it has been a pleasure working alongside their Wise Steps team to give Shibu the opportunity and support he needs and I am confident that despite all of the challenges we face in these difficult times he will be successful.”
